Praise ye him, sun and moon:
praise him, all ye stars of light.

Praise ye him, sun and moon:
praise him, all ye stars of light.

Praise ye him, sun and moon:
praise him, all ye stars of light.

— Psalms 148:3 KJV —

Pale light lays gently over field and sea and dune,
emanating through the night from heaven’s wondrous lune
as it caresses rolling wave and tide in implicit commune,
laughing with that little dog about that dish and spoon
that find romance and share a sentimental honey tune
under the reflective, watchful eye that He called moon.

The Bible often equates the moon with idol worship or apocalyptic events. However, the first references show that the Lord created it to give light in the night. We also know that it affects the tides, and it provides mystery, wonder, scientific discovery, and romance, and thereby makes our world a more fascinating place to live. May we always praise the true and living God for creating this heavenly sphere!

Please enjoy the images below of the moon in various settings, in and around the Malangen and Balsfjord areas of Northern Norway.

Please also enjoy YouTube audio (with a static caption slide), published by user loquaciousquark, of a stunningly beautiful and haunting rendition of The Moon is Distant from the Sea (text by Emily Dickenson, music by David Childs) by the Huntsville (AL) All-City Choral Festival SATB High School Choir in 2005. Although the video has no action, this rendition is one of the best I have found on YouTube.

One interpretation of the song text (below) is that just as the moon leads the sea, the writer humbly submits to the will of the Lord in all things.

The moon is distant from the sea
And yet, with amber hands
She leads him, docile as a boy
Along appointed sands

He never misses a degree
Obedient to her eye
He comes just so far toward the town
Just so far goes away

Oh, Signor, thine, the amber hand
And mine, the distant sea
Obedient to the least command
Thine eye impose on me
