Video YT001 (Evening Prayer)

Evening Prayer is a choral work by acclaimed Norwegian composer Ola Gjeilo, based on a prayer by St. Augustine (354–430). The text is both simple and exquisite:

Watch, O Lord,
with those who wake,
or watch or weep tonight,
and give your angels charge
over those who sleep.

Tend your sick ones,
O Lord Jesus Christ;
rest your weary ones;
bless your dying ones;
soothe your suffering ones;
pity your afflicted ones;
shield your joyous ones;
and all for your love's sake.

Amen.

I fell in love with this song while singing it with the Glen Ellyn-Wheaton Chorale (GEWC), in the spring of 2015. Ola scored it for SATB chorus, sax, and piano—with improvisation encouraged for both sax and piano—and set it in a contemporary movie soundtrack style that begins with a longing, contemplative sax solo and builds to a glorious, proclamatory choral climax.

I recorded our performance of this song during our concert on 2015_0508, with the intention of producing a video incorporating images I took during my time in Norway. The more I sang this song, the more I knew it reflected how I feel about Norway and its landscape, culture, and people, and I knew I had to connect all of those feelings—stemming from the prayer, the music, and images I hold dear—and share them with the world. (I thank Walton Music wholeheartedly for granting their permission to publish this project.)

The end result is that the beauty of the prayer combines with the beauty of the music and images to transport the viewer, both musically and visually, from a solitary moon over a darkened mountain to a blazing sunset shining among the clouds as though the Lord Himself were appearing in the final, grand Amen. The video is eight minutes long, so set aside time to start and complete a marvelous journey by watching it through to its glorious climax and final fade-out!

Below are links to both the video and all of the images I used in it (in order of appearance in the video). The video link opens up a new window at YouTube, rather than streaming it directly on this page, so that viewers can, if they wish, post comments at YouTube and (if the device screen is large enough) compare the text and/or images side-by-side with the running video.
